چکیده

η Carinae is one of the most extreme cases of a Luminous Blue Variable star. A bipolar nebula of 17′′ size surrounds the central object. Even further out, a large amount of filamentary material extends to a distance of 30′′ or about 0.3 pc. In this paper we present a detailed kinematic and morphological analysis of some outer filaments in this nebula which we call strings. All strings are extremly long and narrow structures. We identified 5 strings which have sizes of 0.058 to 0.177 pc in length and a width of only 0.002 pc. Using high-resolution longslit echelle spectroscopy it was found that the strings follow a Hubble law with velocities increasing towards larger distances from the star. With these unique properties, high collimation and linear increase of the radial velocity the strings represent a newly found phenomena in the structure and evolution of nebulae around LBVs. Finally, we show that morphologically similar strings can be found in the planetary nebula NGC 6543, a possible PN-counterpart to this phenomenon.

High velocity structures in , and the X - ray emission from the LBV nebula around η Carinae

The Luminous Blue Variable star η Carinae is one of the most massive stars known. It underwent a giant eruption in 1843 in which the Homunculus nebula was created. ROSAT and ASCA data indicate the existence of a hard and a soft X-ray component which appear to be spatially distinct: a softer diffuse shell of the nebula around η Carinae and a harder point-like source centered on the star η Car. A...

Comparing Eta Carinae with the Red Rectangle

I compare the structures of the bipolar nebulae around the massive binary system η Carinae and around the low mass binary system HD 44179. While η Carinae is on its way to become a supernova, the Red Rectangle is on its way to form a planetary nebula. Despite the two orders of magnitude difference in mass, these two systems show several similarities, both in the properties of the stellar binary...

Submillimetre emission from η Carinae

We present critical, long-wavelength observations of η Carinae in the submillimetre using SCUBA on the JCMT at 850 and 450 μm to confirm the presence of a large mass of warm dust around the central star. We fit a two-component blackbody to the IR-submm spectral energy distribution (SED) and estimate between 0.3− 0.7 M⊙ of dust exists in the nebula depending on the dust absorption properties and...

A Model for the Strings of Η Carinae

We propose a model based on ionization shadows to explain the formation of the long and narrow strings of η Carinae. Five strings are known, all located along the symmetry axis outside the Homunculus. The model assumes that each string is formed in a shadow behind a dense clump near the symmetry axis. The surrounding gas is ionized first, becomes much hotter, and compresses the gas in the shado...

The bipolar structure of the LBV nebula around HR Carinae

HR Carinae is one of the few Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) in the Galaxy. It has a nebula that appears bipolar. Wehave obtained imaging and high-dispersion, long-slit echelle data of the HRCar nebula, and confirmed that it is a bipolar nebula. Its polar axis lies along the position angle of 125±5◦; each lobe has, at a distance of 5 kpc a diameter of ∼ 0.65 pc and a line-of-sight expansion velo...
